SERVPRO of Upper Bucks Destroyed Our Historic Home—And Still Hasn’t Fixed It, 4 Months Later
We hired SERVPRO of Upper Bucks, N.W. Hunterdon County (Servpro Team McCabe) for a small, two-day mold remediation job in the attic of the 1920s historic farmhouse we had just purchased in Riegelsville, PA. The mold was mild and limited to the insulation. We were assured the insulation would be carefully removed and a clear encapsulant applied only to affected areas.
We scheduled the work to be completed before move-in. Instead, SERVPRO’s mishandling displaced us from our home, caused significant damage, and led to serious delays and health concerns. What should have taken two days stretched into over a month—leaving our attic, HVAC system, and parts of our interior permanently damaged.
This was not a crawlspace—it was a walkable, historic attic with hardwood floors, exposed beams, and century-old woodwork. Instead of respecting the space, Servpro Team McCabe sprayed thick white coating across every surface: floors, stairs, walls, even mold-free areas. It was applied unevenly and sloppily, permanently obscuring historic features.
Ed from Team McCabe acknowledged the work wasn’t done to scope and sent a crew to fix it. For nearly a month, they attempted to sand and scrape the product off our original woodwork—only causing more damage.
Our home security footage captured Keith, the crew lead, standing in front of a camera saying something like, “I ran out of the clear coating, so I just grabbed the white coating from the shop.” He then cursed about our family, called one of us a “smart ass,” and continued swearing—inside our home. The atmosphere became tense and hostile. We endured this for weeks while they tried (and failed) to fix their mistake.
Additional damage includes:
Cracked attic stair treads—now unsafe to step on
Broken hardwood planks in an upstairs bedroom
Solvent stains on the ceiling below from their “removal” attempt
Peeling paint from plastic sheeting removal
Construction debris and dirt tracked through our home (no floor protection or shoe covers)
Utility bills that tripled due to prolonged work
The cost of hiring professional cleaners after Servpro abandoned the job
Ongoing stress and disruption to our family life
Then we discovered the HVAC damage.
While in the attic, Servpro crushed part of our high-velocity air conditioning system—a delicate and expensive setup common in historic homes. Multiple ducts were visibly smashed. One was “repaired” with a plastic trash bag tied to the air handler. That bag is still there (as of July 2), and we haven’t been able to safely run the system—during a heat wave.
Multiple HVAC professionals have confirmed:
The system’s ductwork is beyond repair
Full replacement is required ($5k+)
Fiberglass ducts were crushed and may be blowing particles into our home
Despite all this, Servpro Team McCabe has offered no resolution. Our last contact with them was April 28, when we asked what they would do to make this right. We’ve heard nothing since—no apology, no reimbursement, no plan. In July, they finally reached out… to ask for their final payment.
We’ve documented everything: security footage, photos of damage, communications with Servpro, HVAC evaluations, and quotes.
We are a young family who trusted SERVPRO to help make our home safer. Instead, they damaged it, compromised the air system, and left us with the burden—financial and emotional—of cleanup and repair.
We’re sharing this to:
Warn other families, especially those with historic homes and young kids
Urge SERVPRO Corporate to investigate and take responsibility
We never wanted to write this review. But our home—and our health—were put at risk by a company that claims to protect both.
