This is a long one so bear with me.
I purchased a pair of winter boots from Jones Bootmaker in December 2023 at. These boots were designed for cold weather, with a warm, teddy-like lining on the inside. I wore them intermittently until early March 2024, when the weather became warmer, and I stored them away. When I took them out again in December 2024, they had only been worn for less than two weeks when one boot began letting in water.
I took the boots to a cobbler, who explained that the soles were glued rather than stitched. Unfortunately, the glue was failing, and he advised me that the boots couldn’t be successfully repaired. Feeling this was unreasonable, given that I’d had less than four months of wear from the boots, I contacted Jones Bootmaker’s customer service for help. They responded quickly and advised me to visit one of their stores to explain the situation, where they said I would receive assistance.
I went to the Liverpool Street store near to work. However, I was told that the issue was "wear and tear" and that I should try another cobbler for repairs. The manager said they would also consult their quality control team in the meantime. They took my details and promised to get back to me. However, two weeks passed with no follow-up.
I eventually visited another cobbler, who managed to repair the boot temporarily but warned me that the fix wouldn’t last—and it didn’t. Frustrated, I returned to the Liverpool Street store, where the manager didn’t even remember me. I had to explain the entire situation again, only for her to confirm what the cobbler had said: the glued soles couldn’t be repaired, as only stitched soles are replaceable. She claimed she would contact the store where I originally purchased the boots to locate my receipt, as I no longer had it, although I did have proof of purchase with the date and time and showed it to her.
Another two weeks passed with no response. I had to visit the store multiple times, often finding the manager unavailable. Finally, in mid-January 2025, after chasing them again, the manager told me she couldn’t help. She hadn’t been able to locate the receipt—though I suspect she hadn’t tried—and claimed there was no way to confirm that the purchase on my card statement was for those boots. Instead, she offered me a 20% discount on my next purchase as a "gesture of goodwill."
After such a frustrating and drawn-out experience, I initially accepted the offer just to move on, intending to pick a new pair of boots. However, I couldn’t find anything I liked and realised I didn’t want to spend more money after this ordeal. Ultimately, I decided not to buy from Jones Bootmaker again.
I used to shop at this store frequently, but based on this experience, I would advise others to avoid them altogether.
