Do not be misled, false advertisement of benefits on their website page. We had researched many policies before deciding to commit to this company due to their “claimed” coverage. 1) on the main page it shows a graph on how they cover more than other policies under “how our coverage stands out” 2) they do not email you a terms and conditions until after you have signed up/paid. 3) In the options for pet insurance it does not give you an option or mention of additional coverage when renewing your plan..so you are mislead to think that you have the coverage that includes all that is listed on the website. Our story: my husband and I were planning to get pet insurance through a different company when AKC offered a 30 day free trial. We went to the website to see what they cover and saw the graph that included vaccines and wellness exams. We opted to start it the day we had a vet exam after seeing this graph. The policy did not mention anything about taking effect at a later date until after we had already signed up. We took the loss of that pet exam. We had a second exam for routine vaccinations in which we submitted a claim for. We opted to continue the coverage on our portal, it did not give an option AT ALL about adding “defender” coverage..we thought that the only options regarding insurance were the ones listed when opting to continue coverage. claim was denied stating that vaccinations and exam fees are not covered (but it states on the graph of the site it is). When talking with customer service, they said that the only way to add defender which is the additional coverage that covers it, is by talking to a licensed representative (which also is not listed in the terms and conditions THAT WAS EMAILED ONLY AFTER WE PAID TO CONTINUE..not before..) In the terms and conditions it does not state anywhere that you have to call and talk to someone to get this “optional coverage”. Long story short- don’t make the mistake we did and look at what’s advertised on the website and expect that is what is included. We were gipped out of so much money as our dogs vaccine schedule is now done and we were under the misled information advertised that vaccines and wellness was included as listed on the website.

Absolutely terrible insurance company that has all kinds of loopholes so they don’t have to pay out. My dog was pooping blood and they won’t cover my vet fees because it is a “regular vet visit.” All because we didn't get a stool sample. So the meds that the vet gave us worked, but because they didn’t have a condition from a stool sample, I’m denied the coverage. My dog is sick, I take her to the vet, glad I had insurance. Then they say it wasn’t necessary. Seriously, this is a horrific company who preys on let owners. They should be ashamed.

I decided to go with AKC Pet Insurance as they are one of the very few pet insurance companies that covers pre-existing conditions (after having the policy for a year). I have not used that feature yet as I haven't had the policy long enough, but each of my dogs had an incident this past year requiring emergency care, and I'm so glad I had this coverage. I just took photos of the invoices, submitted them online, and was reimbursed for a portion of the costs with a week or so. I can't remember if exactly 70% (what I pay for in my plan) was covered with the first incident, but I was reimbursed for a significant amount, and the most recent incident they covered 70% no problem. It can be a little difficult to remember exactly what is covered as far as routine/annual vet visits and vaccines and have to go back through all the plan documentation to see the language in each policy add-on, but when I have needed it most, AKC has been easy to work with and helped provide some financial stability.
