I have found Friendship Hospital for Animals to be one of the best hospitals in the area. Can it be expensive, yes, can there be a wait especially if you have an urgent issue, yes, can it be an experience just like a human hospital, yes, but it is worth it. THIS IS A HOSPITAL. It has all the specialties of a hospital (this place attracts veterinary talent), all the latest equipment, and all the professionalism one would expect for a well run hospital.
When I first took my critically ill pet there last year I thought, gosh, I came to the wrong place because the lobby is understated and usually packed with patients. But she got the best care and we had the best hope for her condition. This year, when we found our newly adopted little pup had health issues beyond what a normal vet could provide, we went straight to FHFA. Luna went initially for incontinence, but we found a serious heart murmur and because they have a cardiologist specialist on staff, we were able to have both conditions evaluated the same day. The incontinence issue was easily addressed by Dr. Skinner, the heart condition not so much. Sadly Luna was diagnosed with sever pulmonary stenosis, a constriction in the artery, which strains the heart and would shorten her life; we may have only had her for 3 years. Luckily Dr. McLaughlin, the cardiology specialist, has extensive experience in a procedure called balloon valvuloplasty, which involves opening and splitting the valve that restricts normal blood flow. Our procedure was an hour, she was kept for one day, and her prognosis now is EXCELLENT. She can live a full and normal life.
We are so grateful to both Dr. Skinner and Dr. McLaughlin to have the skills and experience to provide excellent, specialized care. It's important to have a place to rely on when you face critical care issues for your family.
I know people will say how expensive these things can be, and they can. I would urge anyone or everyone to seek pet insurance. While it won't cover everything, it's worth it. Be sure to get the insurance and let it kick in before going for a diagnosis. It can make all the difference.
Hug your pets. Especially the ornery ones.
