Joe’S Shanghai's customer reviews analysis

Evaluating the customer feedback for Joe's Shanghai, it becomes apparent that the establishment has cultivated a strong reputation for serving authentic and delicious food, with particular acclaim for their signature soup dumplings. Customers frequently highlight the quality, flavor, and authenticity of the dining experience, considering the meals to be a highlight of their visits. However, patrons cite the waiting time as a point of contention, reporting waits of up to an hour, especially during peak hours. The communal dining setup and restaurant's policy of being cash-only have been noted as potential drawbacks for some. Service is described as efficient, if not overtly friendly, and the portion sizes are generous, delivering good value for the money. The ambiance is generally seen as clean, although it lacks distinct coziness, which seems to be a trade-off for focusing on the culinary experience rather than interior design.

Positive Feedback

Joe's Shanghai positively impresses its customers with the high quality and authenticity of its culinary offerings, especially their signature soup dumplings which are frequently described as 'a must-try', 'incredible', and 'to die for'. The richness and satisfaction derived from the dishes, including the sesame beef, braised pork belly, and other menu items, are often highlighted. Generous portion sizes contribute to the perception of good value for money. The service is reported to be quick and efficient, enhancing the dining experience. Additionally, the strategic location in the heart of Chinatown is appreciated for adding authenticity, and the clean albeit simple ambiance of the restaurant is frequently mentioned with approval.

Concerns and Threads

Despite the numerous positives, Joe's Shanghai faces criticism on several fronts. A recurrent theme is the substantial waiting time, with customers reporting waits of up to an hour due to the restaurant's popularity. The ambiance is described as 'loud and cramped', which, paired with the communal dining oriented towards larger groups, might not appeal to everyone. Some patrons find the food to be inconsistent, with items like the thick seafood noodles and fried buns with condensed milk described as bland or non-essential. The fact that the restaurant is cash-only and implements compulsory tipping is also seen as a drawback for some customers. Additionally, there are observations that some offerings, such as the scallion pancake, can be more oily than anticipated.

The food is delicious! One of the best and more authentic in the city. The soup dumplings are a must-try, sipping the broth then eating the meat is a journey in themselves. We also ordered the Sesame Beef and eggplant (kind of sweet), both very good. *Waiting Time*: We wait about 30 minutes, get the ticket inside. The wait is worth it for the food quality. *Service*: Good and efficient. Don't expect over-the-top friendliness, but you will be well taken care of. *Price*: About $30 per person. Remember, it's cash only! *Location & ambiance*: Close to the heart of Chinatown, adding to the authenticity of the dining experience. The ambiance is clean and straightforward. It lacks distinctive coziness or style but focuses on what's important: the dining experience. In summary, Joe's Shanghai offers an excellent dining experience with its top-notch food. The service is efficient, the ambiance clean, and the prices are reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. The authentic Chinatown location and the overall value make the wait worthwhile. It's a reliable choice for a delicious meal.

Blown away. Really, truly, this place was exceptional in every way. We got there as they were opening and we're amazed to see just how quickly the tables filled up shortly after. Quick service, generous portions, and unbelievable food. The braised pork belly with preserves vegetables was exactly what we needed on a chilly day around the holidays. The crab and pork soup dumplings were rich in a way that I can't describe.. savory, salty, rich, just amazing. We shared the Shanghai rice and jellyfish as well. Can't recommend them highly enough.

We got spicy fish which was really good… really spicy, definitely cleared out my sinuses, but I loved it! We also got scallion pancake, which was good but more oily than I’m used to. My partner got the soup dumplings which they said was alright, not the most amazing they’ve ever had. The green beans were my favorite thing that I’ve had. We also tried the thick seafood noodles which didn’t taste like anything at all, so bland. For desert we got the fried buns with condensed milk, honestly could’ve skipped it. If you’re coming with a party, be prepared to wait outside for an hour. There was only 2 of us so we didn’t have to wait at all, luckily. It was loud and cramped in there. Seems to be a very popular touristy place, really focused on group dining and communal plates so if that’s family style eating isn’t for you, this is not the place for you. Because it was only 2 of us, we ended up spending a lot of money on several dishes that were meant to be shared by multiple people. We spent $125 in total and tip was included Would I come back? No but I liked the experience that I had there.
